Deliver child/youth programs that enhance recreational, social, and/or educational activities.
Assist youth in all aspects of development that ensure their personal well-being and their sense of well-being within their communities.
SCHSS offers a wide range of youth programs that focus on recreation, personal development, cultural awareness, and community engagement. Regular activities include recreation and sports such as gym nights in Coldwater, Shackan, and Nooaitch, community bowling nights, annual trips to Cultus Lake Water Park and Harper Mountain, after-school swim programs, and winter fitness classes like yoga and cardio boot camps. Youth are also supported in registering for organized sports including baseball, soccer, gymnastics, lacrosse, basketball, swimming lessons, and hockey. SCHSS has hosted various sports clinics such as archery, soccer, basketball, and volleyball camps.
Youth training and workshops play a key role, offering opportunities like women’s self-defense classes, babysitting courses through St. John Ambulance, “Learn to Fish” programming at Monck Park, and impactful yearly trips to Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside with Lee Mason’s “Kidz on the Skidz” street tours. These workshops promote life skills, confidence, and real-world learning.
Cultural and traditional awareness is woven throughout youth programming with hands-on teachings in drum making, pow wow dancing, beading, dip net crafting, tanning hides, dream catchers, bow and arrows, storytelling, hand drumming, rattle making, and more. Drop-in centres and group activities provide additional safe, inclusive spaces for youth to connect, grow, and explore their identity in a supportive community setting.
Gym Nights
We host regular gym nights in the Coldwater, Shackan, and Nooaitch communities, giving youth a safe and fun place to stay active, connect with friends, and build healthy habits through sports and recreation.
Girl Power Program
Girl Power is an educational, creative and sharing group for pre -teen girls to safely explore cultural and pre-adolescent issues. Girl Power is a prevention program in that it introduces girls to concepts and skills prior to the difficult issues typically faces by teens. In doing so, it is hoped that some of the intensity of the issues can be diffused. Girl Power offers a foundation that will provide girls with the experience of self-discovery and the experience of being capable and accomplished individual
2BBoys Program
The program is designed to assist boys in connecting to their true selves in an empowering, respectful, healthy and dynamic way. The program focuses on building the social and emotional skills boys need to succeed in life, fostering self-confidence, respect for others, and a strong sense of identity.
Culture & Traditional Awareness
Cultural and traditional teachings are woven throughout our youth programming, offering hands-on experiences and activities designed to strengthen cultural connections and support youth in exploring and embracing their identity.
Drop-In’s – Afterschool & Summer Programs
Our drop-in programs provide safe, inclusive spaces for youth to connect, learn, and have fun. After-school and summer drop-ins include games, creative activities, skill-building workshops, and social time in a supportive community environment.
Recreation & Sports Activities
Youth can participate in a variety of recreational and sports opportunities, including community bowling nights, after-school swim programs, yoga, cardio boot camps, and winter fitness classes.
We also help youth register for organized sports such as baseball, soccer, gymnastics, lacrosse, basketball, swimming lessons, and hockey, and host sports clinics in archery, soccer, basketball, and volleyball.
Annual special events—like trips to Cultus Lake Water Park, Harper Mountain, and “Learn to Fish” programming at Monck Park—provide additional opportunities for fun, skill-building, and community engagement.
These collaborative efforts by SCHSS with various programs and organizations underscore a comprehensive approach to community health, addressing physical fitness, maternal health, nutrition, and access to healthcare services, thus enhancing the overall quality of life for community members.
